Silver City Ranger District Closes Two Campgrounds for Public Safety

7/31/2017

Picture
(Silver City) - The Gila National Forest, Silver City Ranger District has implemented a temporary closure effective immediately for the Iron Creek Campground and the Railroad Campground. This closure is for public safety since the entrance to the Iron Creek Campground has flooded out. NM State Patrol, Grant County Sheriff’s Department and FS Law Enforcement responded when several people had to be rescued when the flooding occurred.
The Railroad Campground will be used by New Mexico Department of Transportation (NMDOT) as a staging area for repair work and vehicles.
The Southwest portion of the United States is in monsoon season. Flooding and road wash-outs is a natural result of the monsoonal rains. Even if the immediate area isn’t receiving rain, there could be a rainstorm somewhere else in the forest and the water flow could become dangerous.
Some road closures that may affect your travel in/around the Gila National Forest are: NM 152 closed from MM 22-40; NM 35 closed from MM 5-27 and NM 61 closed from 12-24.
Safety tips for traveling in the Gila National Forest so that you “Know before You Go”:
·         Check with NM Roads for up-to-date road conditions.
·         Check in with the USGS National Water Information System which will indicate water flows for the Gila River and Mimbres River Basin.
·         Remember that the Gila NF covers over 3 million acres and many small communities.
·         DO NOT cross flooded roadways or flooded washes.
Reminder:  the Cherry Creek Campground and the McMillan Campground access crosses through a flood plain as well. There are many alternatives available for dispersed camping on the Gila NF and if you would like a more developed camping experience, there are other campgrounds such as Upper End and Mesa Campgrounds at Lake Roberts. Be safe and have fun!!!
