(Deming) – New Mexico State Police and the Luna County Sheriff’s Office will be conducting sobriety checkpoints, DWI saturation patrols, traffic safety patrols, and registration, insurance and drivers’ license checkpoints in Luna County during the month of August.

Reportedly, such efforts have shown a significant reduction in alcohol-related fatalities which has been attributed to the continued media attention and public awareness of the dangers of driving intoxicated or distracted.

Also, studies show people are choosing not to drive after drinking which is the biggest factor in keeping impaired drivers off the roadways.

And Luna County Sheriff’s Lt. Joy Mullins reminds residents that school will be starting back August 17th, so drivers need to prepare for active school zones once again.

As always, law enforcement officers remind drivers to watch their speed, properly buckle themselves and their children, never text while driving or otherwise drive distracted, and never drive impaired.

The accident occurred at about 6:30 p.m. Thursday when a 2006 Jeep Cherokee, being driven south on Tin by 26-year-old Estela Camunez, failed to yield to oncoming traffic at the intersection.

The Jeep was struck by a 2003 Toyota Corolla being driven west on Pine by Kabar.
