LAS CRUCES, N.M. (AP) — A Deming gun store owner accused of selling weapons to Mexican drug cartels says he never took seriously comments from a customer-turned-informant who talked about taking guns and ammunition south of the border.

Rick Reese, owner of New Deal Shooting Sports, testified Monday that the man was boisterous and bragging all the time, so he didn't believe anything he said.

Reese, his wife, Terri, and their sons, Ryin and Remington, are on trial on charges that they sold assault rifles and ammunition to the informant and undercover federal agents.

The informant, Jose Roman, testified against the Reeses last week. Roman implicated the family after he was arrested in January 2011 on marijuana distribution charges.

(Deming) – If you race a duck in  next month’s Great American Duck Race in Deming, you will be rewarded with a  ribbon. Organizers say that  after at least a three-year hiatus, the “I Raced a Duck!” ribbons will be back this year.

The yellow and red  ribbons will celebrate the New Mexico Centennial theme… and every racer will receive one.
This year’s Great  American Duck Race is an official New Mexico Centennial event. Duck races begin at  noon Saturday and Sunday, August 25th and 26th.  Race finals will be Sunday  afternoon.

And organizers are  encouraging racing challenges – or grudge matches – this year.  Businesses and  organizations can challenge one another to a special duck race – and  accompanying bragging rights – Saturday afternoon.

Activities begin  Thursday, August 23rd, with the Duck Royalty  Pageant.
