Sensient Buys New Mexico Chile Products

DEMING – A dehydrated chile production facility in Deming has been acquired by a global food manufacturer. 
     Milwaukee-based Sensient Natural Ingredients announced it has finalized the acquisition of New Mexico Chile Products, which processes capsicums and a variety of specialty chiles for commercial sale. 
     The facility is located at 3225 NM 418 — or the Old Lordsburg Hwy. 
     A media release said Sensient is a national processor and supplier of vegetable products and natural food ingredients. 
     The release said Sensient is one of North America’s largest processors of onion, garlic, capsicum, and other specialty vegetable products, adding that all Sensient’s products are “responsibly sourced using sustainable farming methods.” 

DHS Graduate Simpson Receives National Merit Scholarship

DEMING - The National Merit Scholarship Corporation announced this year’s National Merit $2500 Scholarship winners.  
     The $2,500 Merit Scholar designees were chosen from a talent pool of some 16,000 outstanding finalists in the 2021 National Merit Scholarship Program.     
     Deming High School Senior Rachel Simpson was selected as the New Mexico winner.      
     Yvonne Perales, DHS Counselor said, “These scholarships come ever 10-15 years and are very hard to get.”   
     National Merit $2500 Scholarship winners are the Finalists in each state judged to have the strongest combination of accomplishments, skills, and potential for success in rigorous college studies.  
     Scholars were selected by a committee of college admissions officers and high school counselors, who appraised information submitted by both the finalists and their high schools including the academic record, difficulty level of subjects studied, and grades earned.

Deming Public School's Laptop, Charger, and Hotspot Returns

DEMING - Deming Public Schools would like to remind parents, guardians, and students to return their laptops, chargers, and hotspots before the last day of school Thursday, May 27.  
     If you are unable to return the devices, you will be charged a fee for each non returned device. Fees will be documented in Infinite Campus.  
    Please contact your child's school to see when they have scheduled returns for laptops, chargers, and hotspots.  
      Technology will have personnel at the Port of Entry in Columbus on Wednesday, May 26 and Thursday, May 27 from 9am to 2pm to accept devices from our Palomas students.  
     If you have any questions on returning devices, please contact your child's school. 


Luna County Sheriff’s Department Traffic Enforcement

​The Luna County Sheriff’s Office will be conducting selective traffic enforcement throughout the last part of May.  

According to a media release, this includes, but is not limited to speeding, seatbelts, child safety seats, distracted driving and any other traffic violations.  

Also, during the last two weeks of May, the Luna County Sheriff’s Department will also be conducting ENDWI checkpoints within Luna County.

Motorists are reminded to watch your speed, make sure you and your loved ones are buckled up and please, don’t drink and drive. 

Local Crime Report for Tuesday May 18, 2021

DEMING -  Here’s today’s local crime report. 
     Rokki L. Howard, age 30, was arrested for two counts of commercial burglary after allegedly breaking into Memorial Elementary school over the weekend, and taking a laptop, a guitar and tablet.  Police used video surveillance and made the arrest when she returned to the school Monday to retrieve a cell phone she allegedly left behind. 
     Carman Regalado, age 41, arrested for unlawful use of a license – driving with a suspended or revoked license…  Shawn Reyela, age 49, was arrested for trespassing at 5R truck stop and resisting evading or obstructing an officer…  Benjamin Perez, age 39, arrested for injuring or defacing property and prowling…  Dezarae Anzaulda, age 26, was arrested on a Magistrate warrant for abuse of a child.

Luna County Commission Meets in Special Session Wednesday

​​DEMING – The Luna County commissioners will meet in special session Wednesday May 19, 2021 to discuss the county’s budget. 
     The special meeting is scheduled to begin at 10 a.m. Wednesday May 19th, and the 2021-2022 preliminary fiscal budget is the only item on the agenda.
     Again, the special session is set to begin at 10 a.m. Wednesday, in the commission chambers, located on the third floor of the Luna County Courthouse, 700 S. Silver Ave. 
     The special work session is open to the public.
  


Deming School Board Meets Wednesday Evening

DEMING – The Deming School Board will meet in regular session Wednesday May 19th. 
     According to the legal notice, the board will hear from the Student council, and other organizations.   

     Under action items, the board will consider and approval of a resolution proposing a general obligation school bond ballot question.  Also, approve a memorandum of understanding with Haynes Busses and M&T Busses regarding bus maintenance and transportation.   
     The virtual  meeting will begin at 6 p.m. Wednesday, May 19th, 2021, and will be streamed live on the district’s YouTube channel with a link posted on the district’s website homepage at www.demingps.org.  
     Participants can ask questions through the comments section or by emailing questions to kim.hernandez@demingps.org.  


Deming City Council Meets Tuesday

​DEMING – The Deming City Council will meet in regular session Tuesday evening. 
     The meeting will be conducted remotely and the link is available on the meeting agenda posted at www.cityofdeming.org. 
     Included on the agenda is an update from Carol Ness with American Magnesium, selection of the winner of the name-the-splash-pad contest, a mayoral appointment to the Extraterritorial Zoning Authority, and resolutions for a multi-services agreement the Luna County, a grant application for an industrial freight transportation route and pedestrian safety improvements, and a November 2nd municipal election. 
     Also, public hearings for ordinances addressing zoning map amendments and a local economic development project will be held, along with a quasi-judicial public hearing for an alternate subdivision request for property located in the 900 block of E. Pear St.   
     The meeting is set to begin at 5:30 p.m. Tuesday, May 18th, and will be open to the public virtually.

DEMING – Here’s the area crime report: 
     Gavin Villegas, age 22, was arrested for aggravated DUI and on an improper-lane driving violation… Brice Howell, age 49, was arrested on a fugitive complaint out of Lincoln County, WY, for possession of methamphetamine… Miya Taliferro, age 28, was arrested for aggravated assault… Sonia Granado, age 46, was arrested on five counts of forgery and one count of identity theft… Eddie Mora, age 52, was arrested for trespassing… Carlos Ransdell, age 27, was arrested for trespassing… Shannon Relyea, age 49, was arrested for shoplifting…  
     Laurence Gable, age 69, was arrested on a Magistrate warrant for failure to appear… Marcelina Garcia, age 51, was arrested on a Magistrate warrant for failure to appear… and a 17-year-old girl was detained for aggravated battery against a household member. 
     Also, a U-Haul trailer valued at $5,000 was reported stolen from a location off N. Gold… electronics and jewelry, with a combined value of over $600, were taken from a residence off S. Iron… a window valued at $500 was broken on a pickup truck parked off S. Santa Cruz… a $300 charge at a Deming gas station was reported as fraud by a person in Utah… and a tire valued at $150 was slashed on a vehicle parked off S. Eighth St.

Deming Duck Races Cancelled for Another Year

DEMING – The 2021 Great American Duck Races in Deming have been cancelled. 
     Chief Quacker Joanna Costilla made the announcement Thursday, saying it was “with heavy hearts” that the committee decided to cancel the annual event which has been the trademark of Deming for over four decades. 
     A media release cited the uncertainty of restrictions on mass gatherings as the reason for the cancellation, and said the committee was placing an emphasis on keeping the community and region safe. 
     The event typically draws crowds from all over New Mexico and neighboring states. 
     The 2020 duck races also were cancelled because of the pandemic. 
     Costilla said they are looking forward to next year’s races, set for August 25-28, 2022.
