Local Crime Report for Thursday May 27, 2021

DEMING – Here’s the area crime report: 
     Yolanda Valdez, age 40, was arrested for possession of methamphetamine, possession of marijuana, possession of drug paraphernalia, driving while license was suspended or revoked, on a registration violation, no proof of insurance, and on two Magistrate warrants – one for failure to appear and one for failure to pay fines… Jacob Price, age 46, was arrested for battery on a peace officer… Jeremiah Perez, age 22, was arrested for trespassing and shoplifting at Walmart… and James Smith, age 40, was arrested for trespassing at a business. 
     Also, criminal damage estimated at $300 occurred to a door frame and window on a residence off Santa Clara… and a 65-year-old woman reported a case of identity theft after learning from her employer that someone filed for unemployment using her personal information. 

Baseball Game Set for New DHS Field

​DEMING – The Deming High Wildcat varsity baseball team will play at the new Deming High School baseball field this Saturday, May 29th. 
     The varsity ‘Cats will host Centennial beginning at 11 a.m. 
     School officials have announced the new facility does not have bleachers, so spectators are advised to bring their own seating. 
     Junior varsity will play Saturday at the city fields beginning at 9 a.m., and parking will be permitted along the outfield fence on Nickel Street for the JV game. 
     Spectators are reminded the New Mexico Public Education Department is requiring masks and social distancing at all school events. 

Chamber Awards Voting Now Open

​DEMING – Voting is now open for the Deming–Luna County Chamber of Commerce “Best of the Kingdom of the Sun” awards. 
     Businesses which received nominations are now competing for “Best of the Kingdom of the Sun” bragging rights during the voting portion, open through June 9th. 
     To vote, log onto www.demingchamber.net and click on “Events” at the top of the page. From there you’ll find the link for the annual meeting and “Best of the Kingdom of the Sun” awards. 
     One submission per person is allowed. 
     Ballots must have a valid email address to be counted. 
     Participants also may download a PDF version, print, complete and drop the ballot off at the Deming-Luna County Chamber of Commerce, 800 E. Pine St. 
     Voting ends at midnight on June 9th, 2021, and winners will be announced June 25th at the Chamber’s annual meeting.

Memorial Day Ceremony Set for Monday

​DEMING – Deming’s American Legion Bataan Post 4 invites residents this Memorial Day to honor the men and women who served their country and died in an effort to ensure freedom for the United States of America. 
     On Monday, May 31st – Memorial Day – a ceremony will be held at Mountain View Cemetery, 3410 E. Pine Street in Deming, beginning at 10 a.m. 
     The guest speaker will be State Senator Crystal Diamond, and the ceremony is open to the public.

DEMING – Here’s today’s local crime report.
     Rhonda Perris, age 52, was arrested for felony possession of a controlled substance methamphetamines, possession of drug paraphernalia and on a Deming Municipal warrant for failure to pay fines…  Alma Arambula, age 35, was arrested for battery against a household member and two counts of criminal damage to property of a household member under $1,000… Carlos Bolanos, age 29, was arrested for aggravated DWI, negligent use of a firearm, unlawful use of a license, open container, driving with a revoked license, felony possession of a controlled substance methamphetamines, possession of a controlled substance cocaine… Isaac Acosta, age 21, was arrested on a Deming Municipal warrant and two Dona Ana County Magistrate warrants for failure to appear…   Anthony Valdez, age 29, was arrested for trespassing… Amber Alfred, age 22, was arrested on a District court warrant for violating conditions of probation… James Ortiz, age 23, of Las Cruces, NM, was arrested on a Dona Ana County Magistrate warrant for failure to appear…  Xavier Escalante, age 19, was arrested on a Magistrate warrant for failure to appear.
     In other reports:  Two men ages 29 and 19, were transported to the hospital after being involved in a traffic accident on south 8th street.  According to sheriff’s reports a Honda passenger car was being driven down 8th street followed by a Dodge Ram pickup.    Near El Bordo road, the passenger vehicle made a U-Turn and was struck by the pickup.  The driver of the Honda was cited for careless driving and no seatbelts, and the driver of the pickup was cited for child not properly restrained.  Sheriff Deputies took a report of an aggravated assault that occurred on West Broadway street in Columbus, after a father and son had an altercation with the son allegedly beating the father over the head with a BB gun.  The son fled the scene and the father was flown to an El Paso trauma center with head injuries.  The incident remains under investigation.  A 2007 blue Hundai was reported stolen from a residence on South 8th street. A purse and contents with a total value of $120 reported stolen from South 8th Street.   The gate on the city owned splash pad park on the corner of 8th and Spruce street was damaged.  Damage was estimated at $500.  


Columbus POE Using Simplified Arrival Process

COLUMBUS – U.S. Customs and Border Protection officials have begun using Simplified Arrival at the Columbus port of entry. 
     Simplified Arrival is an enhanced international arrival process that uses biometric facial comparison technology to automate the manual document checks that are already required for admission into the United States. 
     A media release said officers working at the Columbus port began using Simplified Arrival earlier this month. 
     Reportedly, the biometric facial comparison process only takes a few seconds and is more than 98 percent accurate.  
     Customs and Border Protection officers working at the Columbus port processed approximately 205,000 pedestrians and 307,000 arriving vehicles in fiscal year 2020. 
     During fiscal year 2019 and before pandemic travel restrictions, officers working at Columbus processed more pedestrians – approximately 277,000, but fewer vehicles – approximately 159,000. 

No Poly Cart Trash Pickup on Memorial Day

​DEMING – Monday’s Memorial Day holiday means poly cart trash pickup throughout the city will be delayed one day next week. 
     Deming residents who typically have their carts picked up by Universal Waste Systems on Monday will instead have their carts picked up on Tuesday, June 1st. Tuesday pickups will be Wednesday, and so on through the week. 
     Residents are asked to have their carts out by 7 a.m. on their designated day. 
     Also, city officials have announced the Deming/Luna County transfer station will be closed on Memorial Day.

     Again, no poly cart trash pickup on Memorial Day Monday. Cart pickup will resume Tuesday, June 1st, and pickups will be delayed by one day from the holiday through the end of the week.

DEMING – Here’s the area crime report: 
     Alberto Ortiz, age 22, was arrested on a Magistrate warrant for battery on a household member and false imprisonment, on a District Court warrant for failure to appear, and on a Magistrate warrant for failure to pay fines… Blake Schlotzhauer, age 34, was arrested for shoplifting at Walmart and disorderly conduct… and Catalina Espinoza, age 28, was arrested on a Magistrate warrant for failure to pay fines and on a Municipal warrant for failure to appear. 
     Also, two wheels and tires, with a combined value of $200, were taken off a county-owned vehicle parked off S. Silver… a 55-year-old Deming woman reported being the victim of identity theft after learning someone used her personal information to get unemployment checks… and a breaking-and-entering was reported at a residence off E. Florida.

DEMING – Here’s the area crime report: 
     Hernaldo Herrera, age 50, was arrested for prohibited possession of controlled substances, driving while license was suspended or revoked, and no insurance… Aliyah Haynes, age 18, was arrested for entering a house without consent, interference with officers, and concealing identity… Rudy Munoz, age 59, was arrested for driving while license was suspended or revoked, having an open container, no proof of insurance, and on a registration violation…  
     Cassandra Martinez, age 25, was arrested on an Adult Probation and Parole Office warrant for a probation violation… and Sergio Beltran, age 28, was arrested on a Municipal warrant for failure to pay fines. 
     Also, a 2013 Dodge SUV valued at $5,000 was taken from a location off W. Clark… a 2003 Chevrolet pickup valued at $3,500 was taken from a location off S. Zinc… $2,500 in criminal damage to a vehicle occurred at a location off S. Gold after windows were broken and the body damaged… a window valued at $2,000 was broken on a business off S. Gold… a 2004 Chevrolet four-door valued at $1,000 was taken from a location off S. James… electronics valued at nearly $800 were taken from a location off E. J Street… nearly $200 in criminal damage occurred to two mailboxes off S. Nickel… a rear window valued at $150 was broken on a pickup parked off Mountainaire Rd… and a purse and contents were taken from a location off E. Cedar. 

Luna’s April Unemployment Rate Drops Slightly

​DEMING – Luna County's April unemployment rate decreased slightly from the month prior, but was up from April a year ago. 
     Preliminary figures from the New Mexico Department of Workforce Solutions show Luna County with an April unemployment rate of 18%, down from the revised March rate of 18.7%, but up from the April 2020 rate of 15.1%. 
     Luna County was one of four New Mexico counties with double-digit unemployment last month, with Lea County showing 10.8% unemployment in April, Taos at 10.5%, and McKinley at 10%. 
     In our area, Hidalgo County had 5.6% unemployment last month, Grant County had 7.8%, and the Las Cruces area had 7.7%. 
     Los Alamos County had the lowest unemployment in New Mexico in
April at 3%. 

     Unemployment statewide was 8.2% in April. 
     The New Mexico labor force estimates show Luna County with a labor force of 10,313 – with 8,457 employed and 1,856 unemployed.
