Luna County Files Injunction Against Law Enforcement Union

5/26/2016

Picture
(Deming) – One day after Luna County sheriff’s deputies and detention center officers voted overwhelmingly to unionize, the county filed an injunction against the state labor board and the union.
According to a media release from the American Federation of State, County and Municipal Employees AFL-CIO, the county is claiming bias against the county's lawyer and alleging that the union engaged in improper organizing tactics which wasted thousands of taxpayer dollars on frivolous legal arguments.
The media release said county management also has refused to attend labor board hearings.
Union representative Rob Trombley said the county’s behavior is particularly inappropriate given the nearly unanimous support of employees to unionize.
The two-day vote this week ended with sheriff’s deputies voting 16-to-1 in favor of unionizing, and detention center officers voting 31-to-1 in favor of unionizing.
Interim County Manager Glory Juarez said the county typically doesn’t comment on litigation matters.
