Input Offered on County Animal Ordinance

4/29/2019

Picture
DEMING – Luna County officials reportedly are continuing to work on revising the county’s animal welfare ordinance.
A media release from Deming Animal Guardians Board Member Diana Bell said the revision presumably was prompted to avoid substandard companion animal care that came to light when conditions at Ruff Ruff Sanctuary made statewide news last year.
The media release said a number of groups and individuals have reviewed the draft ordinance and Deming Animal Guardians compiled comments from some of their board members, Animal Protection of NM, a nonprofit companion animal transport service based in Las Cruces, and some local animal welfare activists.
Comments reportedly focused on three main areas: the reporting structure of the county’s animal control officers, specifying frequency of inspections based on number of animals housed at a facility, and issues surrounding adequate staffing and funding of the Deming Luna County Humane Society Animal Shelter.
Bell said the public has been promised a meeting at which to provide comments, but residents also are encouraged to provide input to their Luna County commissioners.
