LOCAL RADIO HOST SCOTTY MCKINNON PASSES

4/30/2012

Comments

(DEMING) --  Beloved local radio personality Scotty McKinnon died early Monday morning at the V-A hospital in Albuquerque.  He was 81.
McKinnon's wife, Rose, said he was being treated for a heart attack, congestive heart failure and pheumonia.  McKinnon was a Thursday morning favorite on KOTS for 5 years with his "Spinnin' with McKinnon Show," billed as, "Radio the way it used to be." He played a variety of songs - many from artists whom he had personally met during his decades in radio in many Canadian and US markets.  His show also focused on personality - something critics say has been lost in this area of satellite delivered radio.
McKinnon stopped being able to do his show in March due to his declining health.
McKinnon's son, Nick, said his father, a Korean war veterran, will be buried in the veteran's cemetery in Santa Fe with military honors.  He will be missed.

ELECTRIC TRANSMISSION LINE MEETING IN DEMING

4/26/2012

Comments

Transmission Line Meeting Here  4/26/12 11:20a
(Deming) -- Deming and Luna County residents will have a chance to chime in on a proposed high-voltage power  line that would run through New Mexico and Arizona.
The Bureau of Land Management  has scheduled a series of open house meetings in both states on an electrical  transmission line that could provide up to 25-hundred megawatts of  electricity.
The first meeting is scheduled  for May 8th in Las Cruces... and the second meeting will be the
following day  here in Deming.
Southline Transmission is proposing building the line in two segments. The first segment would stretch 225 miles from a substation in Afton, New Mexico -- south of Las Cruces, to one in
Apache, Arizona -- south of Willcox.
The second would be an upgrade  of 130 miles of an existing line between Apache and a substation
outside of  Tucson.
The line would cross federal,  state and private lands.
The Deming meeting will be held  on Wednesday, May 9th, from 5:30 to 8 p-m in the Mimbres Valley Learning and  Special Events Center, 2300 East Pine Street.
The format will be an open house with project specialists available for questions. A presentation on the project begins at 6 p-m.

OUTDATED/UNUSED PRESCRIPTION DRUGS

TAKE BACK INITIATIVE SATURDAY
(Deming) -- Local law enforcement and other service providers are participating Saturday in a  nationwide Drug Enforcement Administration initiative to get outdated
prescription drugs out of homes.
Officials say unused  prescription drugs often become part of the illegal substance abuse problem in a community.
Many people are concerned about  the best way to dispose of unused and outdated prescription drugs... and since  most abused prescription drugs come from family and friends, people are urged to  dispose of their unwanted medications before they unwittingly become a drug  provider.
The location for this  Saturday's D-E-A "take back" initiative will be Wal-Mart, and drop-off boxes
will be set up from 10 a-m to 2 p-m.
Residents are asked to drop off  their unused, unwanted and expired prescription drugs -- no questions asked.  They are asking you to place any liquid medications in a sealed container and  not to bring needles or syringes.

LCSO DONATES TO DHS CLASS ACT 2012

4/25/2012

Comments

Picture
(Deming) -- The Luna County Sheriff's Department is increasing its annual donation to
Class Act, the drug-free and alcohol-free after-graduation party in Deming.
Sheriff Raymond Cobos said this year's donation, which comes from Community D-W-I
funds, will be over 900-dollars.
The Sheriff's Department usually budgets a 500-dollar donation from its C-D-W-I
funding, but had remaining money in the account after camera/radar units and
breathalyzers were purchased with the state funds.
Lieutenant Jon Mooridian said they asked state Traffic Safety Bureau officials if the
remaining 419-dollars and 32-cents could be added to the 500-dollar donation and the total given to Class Act... and state officials approved the donation.  Mooridian said there is a provision in the grant for prevention measures... and one goal of the funding is to reduce teen alcohol-related crashes in the state.

FOOD IS FOCUS OF TOWN HALL MEETING

4/25/2012

Comments

(Deming)  -- "What Luna County is Eating Today" is the focus of a Town Hall set for
Thursday evening.  The Town Hall is being organized by Nancy Sherman with Healthy Kids Luna County to begin the dialogue on food choices in the area. Sherman said that while Luna is considered an agricultural county, many residents have lost their skills, techniques and tools for raising fruits and vegetables in a home garden. In addition, Sherman said our farmers and ranchers ship 95%  of what is produced here away, and then residents buy back 97-percent of this food after it has been heavily processed, packaged and less nutritious.
Sherman points to Annie Casey Foundation's "Kids Voice" statistics that show Luna County has more child poverty than any other county in the United States.
Other statistics, she says, show an alarming increase in childhood obesity, diabetes and other chronic diseases.
Sherman has lined up guest speakers for the town hall that include Matt Stong of Preferred Produce and ranchers Jon and Susie Eickhoff, as well as representatives from Senators Jeff Bingaman and Tom Udall's offices to discuss the Federal Farm Bill to be voted on this year.
The Town Hall meeting is open to anyone interested and will take place this Thursday at 5 p-m at the La Fonda Restaurant.
