DEMING – U.S. Border Patrol officials closed all five highway checkpoints in New Mexico over the weekend and reassigned agents to help with an influx of migrant families and unaccompanied children.
An agency spokesperson said Monday the move is temporary, and reaffirmed that checkpoints are integral to the agency’s border security mission.
The Albuquerque Journal is reporting that Border Patrol agents have been coping with a surge in families crossing in the El Paso sector, which includes all of New Mexico.
In a statement released earlier this month, a sector spokesperson said agents were apprehending on average of 570 people per day, with about 90 percent of them coming from Central America.
Officials said that in order to have the manpower to transport and process the large numbers of migrants, checkpoints have been temporarily shut down.
Border Patrol agents operate checkpoints within 100 miles of the border to detect undocumented immigrants and drugs. Agents reportedly also find stolen vehicles and wanted felons.
The spokesperson didn’t say how many agents have been reassigned or whether the sector has taken similar measures in the past.
