Luna County Businesses Eligible for Loans

3/29/2019

Picture
DEMING – Small, nonfarm businesses in Luna County affected by the recent drought are eligible to apply for low-interest federal disaster loans of up to $2 million from the U.S. Small Business Administration.
SBA Director Tanya Garfield said the loans offset economic losses because of reduced revenues caused by drought that began Nov. 1st, 2018.
Luna County is listed as a secondary – or neighboring – county to those counties hardest hit by the drought. Grant and Sierra counties are listed as primary counties.
SBA eligibility covers both the economic impacts on businesses dependent on farmers and ranchers who have suffered agricultural production losses caused by the disaster, and businesses directly impacted by the disaster.
Small, nonfarm businesses, small agricultural cooperatives, small businesses engaged in aquaculture and most private nonprofit organizations of any size may qualify for the Economic Injury Disaster Loans.
Businesses primarily engaged in farming or ranching are not eligible.
Applicants may apply online, receive additional disaster assistance information and download applications at https://disasterloan.sba.gov/ela. Applicants may also call SBA’s Customer Service Center at (800) 659-2955 or email disastercustomerservice@sba.gov.
The deadline to apply for economic injury is Nov. 22, 2019.

U.S. Senators React to Wall in Luna County

3/28/2019

Picture
DEMING – U.S. Senators Tom Udall and Martin Heinrich released a statement Wednesday about the proposed construction of a wall in Luna and Dona Ana counties.
The statement said the Trump administration is proposing the construction of 46 miles of border wall south of Deming – an area the senators said is where a majority of those arriving are seeking asylum.
The project reportedly includes vehicle-barrier replacement beginning approximately 17-and-a-half miles west of the Columbus port of entry, and continuing in non-contiguous segments approximately 35 miles east of the port.
A Udall spokesperson said the Department of Defense indicated existing vehicle barriers would be replaced with segments of pedestrian fence, to include an 18-foot-high steel structure.
The joint statement said the Trump administration’s decision to visit the border in El Paso Wednesday was part of a campaign to –quote— “deceive the American people that there is a national security crisis at the El Paso and New Mexico border.” –end quote-
Both senators said the only crisis is a humanitarian one of the administration’s own creation – caused by its policy of not allowing asylum-seekers to present themselves at official border crossings.
