Local Crime Report for Friday March 30, 2018

(Deming) – Here’s the area crime report:
     Allison Gardner, age 28, was arrested for assault against a household member… Yvette Edwards, age 30, was arrested for burglary, criminal trespassing, and resisting, evading or obstructing an officer… Wilfredo Saenz, age 20, was arrested for disorderly conduct…
     Jamie Gill, age 33, of Las Cruces, was arrested on a Magistrate warrant for failure to appear… Cassandra Martinez, age 21, who was already incarcerated in the Luna County Detention Center, was served a Magistrate warrant for failure to pay fines… Eric Meraz, age 32, who was already incarcerated in the Luna County Detention Center, was served a Magistrate warrant for failure to pay fines… Nick Palumbo, age 55, was arrested on a Magistrate warrant for failure to appear… Jessica Quintana, age 31, was arrested on a Municipal warrant for failure to pay fines… and a 16-year-old boy was cited for resisting, evading or obstructing an officer, concealing identity and possession of drug paraphernalia.
     Also, a compressor valued at $1,200 was taken from a business off W. Railroad Blvd… electronics, jewelry and other items, with a combined value of $600, were taken from a residence off Crystal Rd… and grass fires were reported off N. Tennyson and in the area of Solana and Lucca.

​Service-Animal Training Set for Deming

(Deming) – Representatives from Disability Rights New Mexico and The Disability Coalition will be in Deming April 11th to present training on service animals.
     The title of the two-hour training is: "Service Animals: What You Need to Know.”
     The training will provide an overview of the rules on service animals, including the rights and responsibilities of both animal handlers and businesses.
     The information also is applicable to government programs.
     The training will take place Wednesday, April 11th, from 2-4 p.m. at the Andres Silva Conference Center, 119 E. Pine Street.
     There is no charge to attend and light refreshments will be served.

     Armando Valenzuela, age 20, was arrested for possession of marijuana and on three Municipal warrants – two for failure to pay fines and one for failure to appear… Michael Montes, age 30, was arrested for robbery… Joe Melendez, age 47, was arrested on a Magistrate warrant for robbery… Angelo Rosa, age 34, was arrested for causing criminal damage to property… and Andrew Montoya, age 22, was arrested on a Municipal warrant for failure to pay fines.

Workshop on Fundraising for Nonprofits Planned

​(Deming) – If you are tasked with raising funds for a not-for-profit entity, take note: a workshop titled “The Art of the Ask!” will be offered in Deming on April 11th.
     Southwest Center for Health Innovation Resource Development and Communications Specialist Kendra Milligan said nonprofit board members and staff can learn secrets of successfully asking for donations for their nonprofit at the workshop, presented by national management consultant Sunny Yates Kellerman.
     The workshop is set for Wednesday, April 11th, from 1 to 4 p.m. at the Luna County Courthouse.
     The workshop fee is $25, and attendees must RSVP to 575-597-0035.
     “The Art of the Ask!” workshop is being sponsored by the Nonprofit Resource Group.

Extension Gardening Workshops Begin in April

​(Deming) – Spring is here – and thoughts often turn to gardening.
     Luna County Extension Agent Jack Blandford said he and several volunteers will be presenting gardening workshops throughout the year, with the initial workshop scheduled for next week.
     Blandford said now is a good time to analyze your soil before spring planting, so the first workshop – set for Thursday, April 5th – will focus on soils and soil management.
     The following Thursday, April 12th, the workshop will address irrigating and transplanting.
     Blandford said both workshops will be held from 5:30-7 p.m. at the Luna County Extension Office, 210-B Poplar Street, and the cost of the two workshops will be $10 to cover materials.
     Enrollment is limited to 10 people. Call 546-8806 to register.

Contreras Graduates Basic Training

(Deming) - U.S. Air Force Airman Sahira A. Contreras graduated from basic military training at Joint Base San Antonio-Lackland, San Antonio, Texas.
     The airman completed an intensive, eight-week program that included training in military discipline and studies, Air Force core values, physical fitness, and basic warfare principles and skills.
     Airmen who complete basic training also earn four credits toward an associate in applied science degree through the Community College of the Air Force.
     Contreras earned distinction as an honor graduate.
     She is the daughter of Juan and Sylvia Contreras and niece of Josefina Contreras, all of Deming, N.M.  The airman is a 2017 graduate of Deming High School, Deming, N.M.

(Deming) – Here’s the area crime report:
     Brian Ruiz-Medrano, age 19, of Las Cruces, was arrested for battery on a peace officer, resisting, evading or obstructing an officer and speeding… a criminal summons was issued for Andrew Fitzgerald, age 37, for battery on a household member… Joseph Bruno, age 34, was arrested for escaping from jail… Lorenzo Aguilera, age 35, was arrested for receiving or transferring a stolen motor vehicle and on a Municipal warrant for failure to appear… Stefano Hart, age 24, was arrested for unlawful taking of a motor vehicle… and Emanuel Maynes, age 48, was arrested for driving while license was suspended or revoked, and improper display of registration plate.
     Also, a 1995 U-Haul, valued at $8,000, was not returned to a business off the Columbus Hwy… furniture valued at $1,500 was taken from an unoccupied home off Roosevelt St. in Columbus… criminal damage estimated at $900 occurred to a business off E. Pine after a glass door was broken… speakers valued at $800 were taken from a vehicle parked off S. Nickel… and mail was reported stolen at a residence off Kiva Rd.

Events Saturday to Kick-off Easter

(Deming) – Deming’s Annual Community Easter Egg Hunt is set for Saturday from 10 a.m. to 1 p.m. at Courthouse Park.
     Organizers say over 35,000 eggs and prizes will be available at the event, sponsored by the Deming Fire Department, Deming Police Department, Luna County Sheriff’s Department and First Assembly of God Church.
     Kids can get their picture taken with the Easter bunny, and there will be free food, games and bounce houses.
     Plus the Desert Classics Car Club will present its “Easter Show and Shine” car show. The entry fee is one canned-food item, with the food going to The Well food pantry. Check-in is from 8-10 a.m. at Courthouse Park and children will vote for the winner.
     Again, Deming’s Annual Community Easter Egg Hunt is set for this Saturday, March 31st, from 10 a.m. to 1 p.m. at Courthouse Park.
     Everyone is welcome.

No Tuition Increase for WNMU-Deming

(Deming) – Western New Mexico University-Deming will not increase student tuition next year.
     The WNMU Board of Regents this week unanimously approved a plan to keep student fees and tuition amounts the same for all campuses, including WNMU-Deming.
     The Silver City Sun-News is reporting that the board did vote to proceed with the capital projects transmittal for underground utilities on the main campus in Silver City, and with the disposal of depreciated computers.
     Regent Chair Jerry Walz said he'd like the board to keep tuition rates the same for a while.
     Last week, the University of New Mexico regents voted to increase tuition at UNM by 2.5 percent.

(Deming) – Here’s the area crime report:
     Rosendo Velasquez, age 55, of San Angelo, TX, was arrested for possession of a firearm by a felon and negligent use of a deadly weapon… and Salvador Velez, age 24, was cited for shoplifting at Walmart.
     Also, a trailer valued at over $8,000 was reported stolen from a location off S. Zinc… a box of prescription medication and a bluetooth speaker, with a combined value of over $500, were taken from a residence off S. Tin… and a window valued at $150 was broken on a residence off W. Third.
