A media release said 41-year-old Veronica Valenzuela was sentenced to 156 months in prison followed by five years of supervised release.

(Deming) - Luna County ranked among the best places to own a home in New Mexico based on average rent and home prices in a recent study.
Smart Asset, a personal finance technology company headquartered in New York, just released its third annual study which they say uses financial modeling to power advice on major financial decisions.
The Smart Asset study compared places where buying makes the most sense, and Luna County placed seventh in New Mexico using data including average monthly mortgage payments, average monthly rent, average home prices, and a rent –versus- buy index.
The study showed the best county in which to own a home in New Mexico is Mora, followed by Cibola, Socorro, Sierra and Quay.
Coming in sixth was Chaves, followed by Luna, then Otero, Colfax and Guadalupe.
Additional details on the study, including the methodology and interactive map, are available on the website https://smartasset.com.

Picture
(Deming) – An Albuquerque man is facing numerous charges connected to an attempted carjacking here.
Deming Police Captain Clint Hogan said 25-year-old Pablo Hernandez of Albuquerque was arrested for attempted armed robbery, aggravated assault with a deadly weapon, causing criminal damage to property and concealing identity.
The charges stem from Hernandez’s attempt to steal a car parked at a residence in the 800 block of E. Florida Tuesday at about 5:30 p.m.
Hogan said the vehicle’s owner was inside the residence when she heard her car alarm activate.
The owner told police she went to investigate and found Hernandez inside her car attempting to start it. That’s when he pointed a handgun at her and demanded her car keys.
The owner said she begged him not to steal her car, and he eventually left on foot.
Hogan said he was arrested sometime later.

Wall Addressed at SW Border Security Task Force Meeting

3/30/2017

Picture
(Deming) – President Trump’s proposed wall along the U.S. border with Mexico was discussed at Wednesday’s Southwest Border Security Task Force Meeting in Deming.
Representatives from the offices of Sen. Martin Heinrich, Sen. Tom Udall and Rep. Steve Pearce heard from area Border Patrol agents and residents about issues with the existing border wall and concerns about the proposed wall.
Solicitations to construct the wall had to be submitted by March 24th, and reportedly over 700 companies submitted proposals.
Border Patrol agents said there was a misconception that the current series of walls and fences along the border, which have been built in phases beginning in the mid-1990s, were designed to stop illegal immigration. Agents said the barriers actually were designed to slow illegal crossers so agents have time to respond.
Area ranchers repeatedly voiced biosafety concerns about Mexican cattle crossing into the United States where barriers have been compromised or are nonexistent.
Attendees also were told that President Trump has proposed hiring an additional 5,000 Border Patrol agents and 10,000 Immigration and Customs Enforcement officers.

(Deming) – Volunteers are needed for Saturday’s after-prom party at the Starmax Entertainment Complex.
Luna County DWI Program Coordinator Edith Vazquez said a state substance-abuse epidemiology report shows that Luna County has the second-highest prevalence of drinking among high school students in New Mexico at just over 37%.
Organizers say that’s why events like the alcohol-free post-prom party this Saturday, April 1st, are so important.
The event is being hosted by Starmax, Deming High School and the Luna County DWI Prevention Program with the support of numerous local businesses and individuals, and Vazquez said volunteers are needed to help staff the event to ensure that students have a fun, safe and substance-free prom night.
     Security will be provided.
To volunteer or for more information, contact Vazquez at 544-7377.
