Governor Lifts Mask Mandates - DPS Makes Mask Wearing "Personal Choice"

2/17/2022

Picture
DEMING - At 1:00 pm today, the Governor has lifted all mask mandates, effective immediately. As a result, Deming Public Schools will allow staff and students to make a personal choice to continue wearing a mask or not.
The data, provided by the state, to support their decision is as follows:
     • Since January 28, the number of hospitalized New Mexicans has dropped by 37%, down to 446 yesterday. We now finally have open beds in our hospitals: both general beds and ICU beds. And while this is still a challenging time for our hospitals and providers, they all tell me that the burden has begun to lighten over the past several weeks.
     • New Mexico has been in crisis standards of care, indicating that the pandemic induced burden of disease had outstripped our expanded resources to provide care, since 10/25/2021.
That is almost 4 months! The Medical Advisory Team has discussed the high likelihood that we will not need to renew that declaration again in a few weeks.
• Three weeks ago, we had only about 30% of the treatments we needed on hand to treat high risk New Mexicans with COVID-19.
Thanks to a new monoclonal antibody treatment that has become available, as well and a growing supply of oral treatments, we are now at the point where we again have the ability to provide treatment for all New Mexicans who require it.
If you have any questions, please feel free to contact your school or the district at (575) 546-8841.

Senator Crystal Diamond (R) and Senator Jeff Steinborn (D) Secure Funding to Extend Chile Labor Program

2/15/2022

PictureSenator Crystal Diamond (District 35)
SANTA FE– With only 72 hours left in the 2022 Legislative Budget Session, Republican Senator Crystal Diamond (District 35-Doña Ana, Luna, Hidalgo, and Sierra) and Democrat Senator Jeff Steinborn (District 36-Doña Ana) were successful in extending the chile labor program by securing $1 million dollars in the budget for the initiative.
In 2021, legislators lobbied to create the fund following reports of dire labor shortages for the harvest of our state’s signature crop. The one-time appropriation of federal pandemic relief dollars was used to temporarily bolster the wages of chile workers.
Following the news that Senate Bill 157, the Chile Labor Incentive Program, had been included in this year’s budget, bill sponsors, Senator Diamond and Senator Steinborn, who both represent the iconic Hatch Valley, released the following statements: “This temporary aid will help our family farms in desperate need of workers. Our agriculture industry is the backbone of our state’s economy, and for every community and family that relies on a strong chile harvest, this wage program represents a small step toward recovery," said Senator Diamond. “As our chile farmers struggle to find workers to harvest our prized state chile crop, it’s essential that we help support them meet the global demand.
Hatch and New Mexico have worked hard to establish a global brand for our chile, and we want to ensure we meet the demand,” said Senator Steinborn.
House Bill 2, which includes this key provision, now goes before the full Senate.
