Dodson Again to Compete in Paralympics

(Deming) – With the conclusion of the Olympics over the weekend, eyes are now turning to the Paralympics – and a former Deming resident will again be competing.
Travis Dodson, a 2004 Deming High School graduate, will make his debut as a Paralympic sled hockey player at the 2018 Paralympic Winter Games in PyeongChang, South Korea, next month.
While this is Dodson’s first time competing as a sled hockey athlete, it is not his first appearance in a Paralympic Winter Games. Four years ago in Sochi, Russia, Dodson was a member of the U.S. Paralympic Nordic Ski Team.
A story from Red Line Editorial on the Paralympics web site is reporting that it was actually in Sochi that Dodson learned about sled hockey and developed a desire to try the sport.
Dodson, who is 32, said it is unusual for an athlete to compete in the Paralympics in one sport and four years later to qualify in a different sport.
Dodson raced in four events in the Sochi 2014 Paralympic Winter Games: the 1km sprint, the 7.5km biathlon, the 15km biathlon and the 10km race.
He said transitioning from cross-country skiing to sled hockey was fairly seamless for him because the arm motions are similar.
Dodson did have to give up his place with the U.S. Ski Team after qualifying for the U.S. Development Sled Hockey Team in 2015.
Dodson believes his experience in 2014 will help calm his nerves during this year’s Paralympics.

“Our Food Link” Shopping Day was Tuesday

2/24/2018

(Deming) – For the twelfth time in as many years, Luna County 4-H and the Luna County Farm and Livestock Bureau teamed up to call attention to the abundance, safety and affordability of food – and benefit victims of domestic violence at the same time.
County Extension Agent Jack Blandford said the Luna County 4-H Council, with support from the local Farm Bureau and the Border Belles Cowbelle organization, shopped at Peppers Supermarket Tuesday as part of the “Our Food Link” program, a national Farm Bureau program designed to reach consumers of all ages and backgrounds with information about today’s agriculture.
The Luna County Farm and Livestock Bureau, Border Belles and the Luna County 4-H Council donated a combined $1,200 which the 4-H members spent shopping for perishable items such as beef, fruits and vegetables, and dairy products for The Healing House, Luna County’s domestic violence shelter.
About 20 local 4-H members did the shopping at Peppers Tuesday, and Blandford said it was a good opportunity for the young people to learn the importance of giving back to their community.
Farm Bureau officials say the “Our Food Link” outreach is more important than ever because the average American is now at least three generations removed from the farm.
In fact, farm and ranch families make up less than 2 percent of the U.S. population.
