Deming City Fire Hydrants get Tested

DEMING – Residents in Deming may have noticed fire hydrants covered in black plastic bags throughout the city. According to Deming Fire Chief Joseph Owen, this is part of an ongoing maintenance initiative.

Chief Owen explained that municipal regulations mandate the testing of 100% of fire hydrants every 5 years. The purpose of this testing is to ensure the proper functioning of the hydrant system, allowing the fire department to deliver optimal services to the community. The examination of fire hydrants serves as a proactive measure to identify and address any underlying issues.

Hydrants that have been covered with black bags are those requiring maintenance or potential replacement. Chief Owen emphasized that this maintenance process does not impede the fire department's ability to effectively combat fires. The identified hydrants in need of maintenance have already been attended to, and the city is committed to addressing them promptly.

This maintenance initiative underscores the city's dedication to maintaining a reliable and efficient fire hydrant system, ultimately enhancing the safety and well-being of Deming residents.

Deming Schools to Release Early Due to High Winds

DEMING - Due to high winds, limited visibility, and expected road closures all schools will release early Thursday, January 11, 2024.

New City Hall to Repair Parking Lot with Crack Sealing

DEMING – The City of Deming will be performing crack sealing within the parking lot of the new City Hall located at 1275 East Pine Street.

The schedule of work is as follows:
January 16, 17 & 22 – The parking lot in front of city hall
January 18 – The drive thru
January 23 – 26 – Far East parking lot and drive thu area
January 29 – 30 – Northeast parking lot
January 31 – February 1 and February 5 – Northside and Westside

There will be signs and cautions in the areas during the crack sealings. For more information, contact city hall at 575-546-8848.

Deming Radio's PEt of the Week - DAGSHIP'S Rascal!

DEMIKNG - Deming Radio’s Pet of the Week… This week, we would like you to meet Rascal!

This guy is about 4 years old what may be a long haired chihuahua mix. Rascal doesn't particularly like pictures, he gets all shy when you take the phone out. So don't let the pictures fool you. He is a playful funny guy who LOVES attention!

He does spins when he's happy and will even rub on your legs like cat trying to get attention. Rascal also loves his friends!

We haven't had any issues with dog aggression as he is the sweetest boy. Sometimes dogs will come up to the kennel and bark at Raven and him, he'll just look at them like what's your problem dude. He ignores the cats when he's around them.

For the most part he is a little curious but no chasing. Rascal is such a sweet guy. He just needs someone to come out and see him for the greatness he is!

City of Deming Water Outtage

DEMING — The City of Deming is working to repair a water line, which may result in water outages for residents from Zinc through 8th Street and Granite through 3rd Street.

Services are expected to be restored within 4 hours. The City will provide updates as soon as they become available.

Travel Advisory for Southwest New Mexico

DEMING - The New Mexico Department of Transportation (NMDOT) will be monitoring roadway conditions with law enforcement as high wind advisories have been issued by the National Weather Service (NWS) on January 9, 2024, impacts attached from NWS with Press Release. NWS is forecasting very strong winds from 35 to 45 mph with gusts of 50 mph, and heaviest snow fall will be over the Gila & Black Range region, lowlands seeing trace amounts. Roads may become slick, so travel carefully. Gusty winds/Mountain snow event starting Thursday into Friday, January 11-12. High likelihood of cold to bitterly temperatures Friday morning.

The NMDOT would like to remind the traveling public, blowing dust can escalate to blinding dust storms as they move quickly through remote areas. If you must travel, we recommend you monitor local forecast conditions prior to starting your trip and visit our web site as roadway conditions may change quickly throughout New Mexico.

Roadway advisories will be posted on www.nmroads.com, or by calling 511. If you are approaching a dust storm or caught in a dust storm, please follow the guidelines below to help you stay safe.

Avoid driving into or through a dust storm.
Do not wait until poor visibility makes it difficult to safely pull off the roadway — do it as soon as possible. Completely exit the highway if you can.
If you encounter a dust storm, check traffic immediately around your vehicle (front, back and to the side) and begin slowing down.
Do not stop in the roadway; pull completely out of the travel lanes and as far onto the right shoulder as possible.
Stop the vehicle in a position ensuring it is a safe distance from the main roadway and away from where other vehicles may travel.
Turn off all vehicle lights, including your emergency flashers.
Set your emergency brake and take your foot off the brake.
Stay in the vehicle with your seat belts buckled and wait for the storm to pass.
Drivers of high-profile vehicles should be especially aware of changing weather conditions and travel at reduced speeds.

Improving and Expanding Campus Recreation at WNMU

[Cutline: WNMU will host a grand opening for its new climbing wall at the Campus Recreation Center on Wednesday, January 10, 2024.}

SILVER CITY, NM – Big changes are afoot at the WNMU Campus Recreation Center, including pool improvements and the addition of a climbing wall.

The campus swimming pool will be undergoing substantial improvements, including replacement of the filtration system, which had become obsolete and was no longer functioning properly, and salt chlorination system. Because the filtration and salt chlorination systems are not in-stock items, the entire project is expected to take several months.

The university is taking advantage of this down-time to resurface the pool as well. Campus Recreation Coordinator Breya Brown said she was excited about the pool renovations. “I know it would help with some issues we were previously having with the pool,” she said, “and it will also enhance the look and feel of our pool, which I am sure our members would enjoy.” The university expects the pool to reopen by midsummer.

Another big change in campus recreation has been the installation of a new indoor climbing wall. This wall has been planned for years and has taken several months to construct, but it is now ready for its grand opening, which is scheduled Wednesday, January 10, at 12:00 PM. At the unveiling, attendees will have a chance to learn how the wall’s auto-belay feature works, and Campus Recreation members can be among the first to climb the wall

Brown, who has tried out the climbing wall herself, sees it as a great enhancement to the Campus Recreation experience. “It will allow students to explore different avenues of physical activity and physical fitness,” she said, “It can also provide opportunities for new experiences for our students. At the most basic level, it will be a fun and physically engaging activity for students to participate in that is not too far from their residence halls.”

Brown also sees the wall as consistent with the university’s identity. “Overall,” she said, “this indoor rock wall will further our Edventure intiative, where education and adventure meet here at WNMU.”

These improvements not only promise an enhanced recreational experience, but ensure students, staff, faculty and members of the community have access to safe, state-of-the-art facilities.

Chaparral New Drop-off and Pick-up Locations

DEMING - In consideration of safety and more efficient traffic flow, buses to and from Chaparral Elementary School will have a new drop-off and pick-up location beginning Monday, January 8, 2024.

School buses will now operate in the front of the school, utilizing the drive-through on Holly Street. Personal vehicles will not be allowed in the drive-through bus area from 7:30 to 8:05 AM and from 2:30 to 3:30 PM. No student drop-off or pick-up will be allowed at the front of the school during these times due to bus traffic and safety concerns.

Any student arriving to school later than 8:05 AM must be signed in by an adult through the front office.

Please note the changes to pick-up areas for students during afternoon dismissal at 3:00 PM as noted on the map below. We have added another morning drop-off point for students on Saddler Street.

If a change to pick-up is needed, for example, students not riding the bus, the front office must receive notice before 2:45 PM. Students are not allowed to be pulled from buses.

Early student check-out will not be possible from 2:30 to 3:00 PM. If student(s) need to be picked up early for any reason, it must be done before 2:30 PM.

Pre-K students will now be dropped-off from 7:50 to 8:05 AM and picked-up at 2:45 PM on Saddler Street only.
