Sheriff Gannaway Notes Comments on Social Media

DEMING - Recently social media and other sources have mentioned reports of home invasions and robberies in our community.
​     The Luna County Sheriff’s Office has responded to calls of suspicious persons banging on doors in the early morning hours. The Luna County Sheriff’s Office reports that at no time have these incidents turned into forced entries, robberies, theft or killings.

     Sheriff Kelly Gannaway assures that law enforcement remains vigilant and proactive to reduce crime. Sheriff Kelly Gannaway reports law enforcement will continue working to keep Luna County a safe place to live.
     Recent reports and statistics show that burglaries and larcenies have increased in all areas of Luna County.
     Sheriff Gannaway encourages Luna County residents to report suspicious criminal activity to law enforcement.
     Luna County residents are also encouraged to secure doors and windows. Residents are advised to be especially aware of patterns involving suspicious persons and or vehicles in or around their neighborhoods.

Deming High School's on Extended Remote Learning Next Week

DEMING –According to a news release from Charles Turner, Deming Public Schools assistant to the director, next week Deming high School will be on partial remote learning.  
     Turner said that due to the rapidly rising cases of COVID-19 at Deming High School, and Mimbres Valley High School (MVHS), all students at DHS and MVHS all students at the High Schools will be on the normal Wednesday remote learning setting and also on remote learning on Thursday, January 20th and Friday, January 21st.
     Students will follow their remote Wednesday class schedule on Zoom all three days.
     Any questions about the remote model should be directed to Deming High School at 575-546-2678.

DEMING – Here’s today’s arrest and police reports.
     Kyle Smith, age 37, was arrested for commercial burglary for allegedly entering the Sunoco gas and convenience store at 321 West Pine Street, also charged for possession of drug paraphernalia and criminal trespassing…  Isaac Vargas, age 24, was arrested for two counts of burglary and possession of methamphetamine, 
and a Deming Municipal Court warrant for failure to appear… Joshua Hand, age 37, was arrested for possession of a controlled substance- methamphetamines – and on a 6th Judicial District Court warrant for failure to appear…  Megan Vaughn, age 21, was arrested for battery… Elizabeth Duran, age 31, arrested for interference with officers…  David Miranda, age 47, was arrested on a Sierra County District Court warrant for failure to appear…  David Tidey, age 32, was arrested on three Magistrate Court warrants two for failure to appear, and one for failure to pay fines…  Alejandro Reyes, age 21, was arrested on a Magistrate warrant for failure to appear… Anthony Silva, age 30, of Albuquerque, NM, was arrested for DWI and driving with a suspended or revoked license…  Maria Rios, age 34, was arrested for causing criminal damage to property of a household member. 
     In police reports:  Arson was reported at the Sunoco convenience store and gas station at 321 West Pine Street causing over $1,000 in damage.  Police say they had video footage of the incident and the investigation continues. 

Deming City council Meets Tonight Online

DEMING – The Deming City Council will meet in regular session Tuesday evening.
     Included on the agenda the council will adopt the open meetings act, travel per diem regulations and consider a Colonia’s grant for improvements at Butterfield trail regional landfill.
     The Mayor will also appoint part time and temporary employees.   
     The meeting is set to begin at 5:30 p.m. Tuesday night in the council chambers of the John Strand Municipal Building on South Gold.  The meeting is open to the public from your computer, tablet or smartphone via got to meeting.  The log on information is available below:

DEMING - Here’s today’s local arrest and Crime Report:
     Alonzo Dominguez, age 32, was arrested and charged with aggravated criminal sexual penetration of a child 13-16 years old, a second degree felony, contributing to the delinquency of a minor, incest and exploitation and enticement of a child, a female… Javier Echavarra-Fuentes, age 20, of Denver Colorado was arrested on a Denver warrant for money laundering… Marcus Nieto, age 22, of Truth or Consequences, NM, was arrested and charged with aggravated battery on a peace officer, a Luna County Detention Center Officer while being incarcerated inside the local detention center…  Cesar Nunez, age 20, of Columbus, NM, was arrested on a Magistrate Court warrant for failure to pay fines.


Body of Mexican National Found South of Florida Mountains

     In police reports:
     The badly decomposed body of a female from Mexico was found January 8th in the county on the south side of the Florida Mountains in a remote area.  Luna Count Captain Jose Martinez told Deming Radio News that on Saturday January 8th they received a call from a California Search and Rescue company advising that the body had been found, and they were notified by an illegal immigrant traveling in the area.  Upon arrival, officers found a headless - badly decomposed body of a 25-year-old female who had Mexican Identification. The body was taken by the OMI, and the investigation continues.   
In other police reports: A 74-year-old Deming man found himself involved in a fraud scheme after signing up for an online dating service for $35.  He later learned that the service had stolen an additional $30, 000 from his account.  A small mini-bike and a 2017 Honda Side by Side was reported stolen from a residence in the 400 block of Kansas Street in Columbus.  A glass door valued at $500 was damaged by a b.b. gun on Dona Ana Road.  $350 in tools and miscellaneous items were taken from a residence on Keeler Road.  Finally, a 29-year-old female from Deming reported a case of identity theft after two cell phones were purchased using her identification.

DEMING – Here’s today’s local arrest and crime report.
     Kyle Smith, age 37, was arrested and charged with burglary after allegedly breaking into the Sunoco Convenience Store on Pine Street causing $1,100 in damage to the front door, and larceny for taking a propane tank and cigarettes.   Marie Mitchell, age 30, of Arizona was arrested for burglary of a vehicle and resisting, evading or obstructing an officer… Ismael Fernandez, age 62, was arrested for DWI, improper lane change and possession of a controlled substance methamphetamines… Erik Sanchez, age 37, was arrested on a Magistrate warrant for failure to appear…  Rene Garcia, age 27, was arrested for interfering with officers and disorderly conduct…  Yurinda Rodriguez, age 37, was arrested on a District Court warrant for failure to appear…  Manuel Martinez, age 58, was arrested on two Grant County warrants one for failure to pay fines, one for failure to appear, and on a Deming Municipal warrant for failure to pay fines…  Maria Diaz, age 25, was arrested on a Magistrate warrant for failure to pay fines. 
     In police reports: 
     Two handguns, tools, coins and a safe with a combined value of $1,550 was reported taken from a residence on South 14th street… An electric bike valued at $200 was taken from a residence on East Pine Street.  A Criminal Damage to property report was taken on East Pine Street after the front door of the old K-Mart building - which is owned by the City of Deming, was broken causing $250… A child’s bike valued at $300 was taken from a residence on Santa Clara Street… Finally, a Nintendo Switch valued at $250 was taken from a residence on East Olive.


110 New COVID-19 Cases and 1 Local Death Reported over the Weekend

DEMING – According to the NM Department of Health, COVID-19 continues to be spreading across Luna County with 110 new COVID cases being reported over the past three days Saturday through Monday.  
     Luna County also recorded another resident died from COVID-19 Monday, bringing the county’s total loss of life to the pandemic to 110* people. 
     New Mexico state health officials described the person as a male in his 70’s who had been hospitalized with the virus.
      The state’s COVID-19 dashboard shows the total number of active COVID-19 cases in the Luna County is now 394.
     The state is reporting 4,628 people have completely recovered and 110 people have died, making the cumulative number of positive cases in Luna County 5,132.
    The dashboard also shows 72,062 tests have been administered in the county since the pandemic began.

Luna County Records Two Additional Deaths from COVID-19

DEMING – Luna County recorded another two additional residents died from COVID-19 Thursday, bringing the county’s total loss of life to the virus to 109* people. 
     New Mexico state health officials described one person as a female in her 40’s.
     The other person was described as a male in his 60’s who had been hospitalized with the deadly virus.
     Luna County also recorded 14 additional COVID-19 cases on Thursday. 
    The state’s COVID-19 dashboard shows the total number of active COVID-19 cases in the Luna County is now 367.
    The state is reporting 4,547 people have completely recovered and 109 people have died, making the cumulative number of positive cases in Luna County 5,023.
    The dashboard also shows 71,390 tests have been administered in the county since the pandemic began.

Charter School Announces Work Sessions in Las Cruces

DEMING – The Deming Cesar Chavez Charter High School’s Governance Council will be holding work sessions on Friday January 7th and Saturday January 8th in Las Cruces.
     According to the media release, Friday’s session will begin at 6:00 P.M.  The Saturday’s work session will begin at 8:00 A.M.
    The work sessions will be held at Hotel Encanto of Las Cruces located on 705 South Telshor Blvd. 
     No action will be taken at the work sessions.
