Over $1.5 Million in Marijuana Seized by Border Patrol Agents

1/19/2018

Picture
(Lordsburg) - U.S. Border Patrol Agents in Lordsburg seized a ton of marijuana yesterday in the boot-heel area of southern New Mexico that was hidden in a remote area.

Agents detected possible illicit activity eight miles north of the international boundary with Mexico. Along with a canine assist, Agents began a coordinated search of an area that was known to have previously been used by drug smugglers. A Border Patrol canine quickly located 61 bundles of suspected marijuana hidden near Alamo Hueco Road. Agents also noted several footprints leading toward and away from the contraband. Although the alleged smugglers attempted to conceal their footprints, agents recognized them by using specialized tracking skills.  Agents took custody of the marijuana and transported it to the station for processing.

While agents transported the drug load back to the station, other agents and their canine partners continued to search the area. The search paid off an hour later when they discovered more marijuana hidden nearby. An additional 17 bundles were discovered there, but the suspects responsible for the bundles had already fled and abandoned their load.

In all, agents seized a total of 2003 pounds of marijuana, valued at $1.6 million. The contraband was turned over to the Drug Enforcement Administration (DEA).

El Paso Sector Chief Patrol Agent Aaron A. Hull said, “This is an example of the critical role that U.S. Border Patrol Agents play in protecting our community and our children from unscrupulous smugglers.”
