(Deming) – The Great American Duck Race recently donated $300 to Deming Animal Guardians.
The money was raised through the sale of ducks following the 2015 duck racing event.
Organizers said each year ducks are offered to good homes, and donations are collected for the non-profit Animal Guardians, a group that provides discount coupons for spaying and neutering.
Board President Mike Hedrick said the Duck Race has always believed in giving back to the community, adding that Deming Animal Guardians provides a needed service and they appreciate all they do.
In other action, the board tentatively decided on a theme for the 2016 37th Annual Great American Duck Race August 25th-28th.
A media release said that if all goes as anticipated, this year’s theme will be "Beach Party Duck.”
More information on the theme and this year's logo will be released later.

(Deming) – Deming School Board members approved an extended calendar for the 2016-2017 school year at their regular monthly meeting Thursday.
Teachers will return to work August 1st, with students reporting August 4th.
The calendar includes a break the week of October 3rd, the Thanksgiving holiday week-long break in November, Christmas break from December 22nd-January 4th, and spring break the week of March 13th.
The last day of school for students will be May 25th, 2017.
In advocating for the extended calendar, School Superintendent Dr. Dan Lere said there was some evidence that shortening the summer might improve student achievement in target areas of second-language learners and students from households in lower socio-economic levels, and there was no evidence that it would harm student achievement.
The current school year includes a week-long break in May which pushed the last day of school into June.  The May break is not included in the 2016-2017 calendar.
