Deming Police Chief Bobby Orosco said 14-year-old Emanuel Young was charged with aggravated assault with a deadly weapon after a student told authorities Young pointed the handgun at him inside one of the school’s bathrooms Monday.
Surveillance video outside the bathroom confirmed the timing of the student’s report.
Young previously was charged with unlawful carrying of a deadly weapon onto school grounds and larceny of a firearm.
School officials found the gun – a 45-caliber Springfield XD-S – in Young’s backpack.
Orosco said Young admitted to stealing the gun Saturday from a local pawn shop, but said he had forgotten it was in his backpack.
The gun was not loaded and Young did not have ammunition in his backpack.
