The public is invited to attend a free field trip sponsored by the Audubon Society on July 23 to see the birds that use the Deming Waste Water Treatment Plant as habitat. We will meet at 8:00 a.m. at the gate to the plant, which is on J St. SE, 1.9 miles east of Country Club Road.
In the arid Southwest, any available source of water is important for birds. The Deming ponds contain clean treated water that can be a good place to see species such as American Avocets and Black-necked Stilts. The water treatment plant is one of the top five birding spots in Luna County. This trip is a part of the nationwide Latino Conservation Week whose goal is to encourage the Latino community to get outdoors, enjoy healthy adventures with family and friends, and to learn more about protecting our natural resources. While Latino community members are encouraged to attend, the field trip is open to the public. Audubon will provide binoculars and spotting scopes to view the birds up close and local experts will be present to help with identification. Information will be given in both English and Spanish. This trip is geared for anyone interested in the outdoors. You don’t need to be a bird watcher to enjoy this excursion that will last for about an hour and a half. Audubon promotes conservation actions that will protect and restore valuable rivers, wetlands, and forests across the West such as the Gila River, New Mexico’s last free-flowing river. As part of this field trip we will discuss the valuable role that wastewater can play in conservation of our water resources. This event is free and open to the public.
