That was the total announced Wednesday by Deming High School staff following Monday night's Deming High School Awards and Scholarship Recognition Program in the Deming Public Schools auditorium.
Deming High School Principal Janean Garney said she phrases the announcement emphasizing “potential” because some students are offered opportunities at more than one college or university, and so will have to decline some of the scholarships.
Local scholarships totaled over $68,000, offers from out-of-state schools totaled nearly $360,000, and other scholarships, including the prestigious Daniels Fund awarded to Salutatorian Velia Moran, totaled over $155,000.
Also, six students looking at military careers received over $490,000 in awards from four separate military branches: Air Force, Army, Marines and Navy.
The Deming High Class of 2013 will graduate Friday evening at Memorial Stadium.
