Team members Wylie Knight, Estefania Rivera, Cynthia Stroud, Krystalyn Stroud, Lester Voorhies and Zach Weise competed in Level I and advanced to Level II of the JROTC Leadership and Academic Bowl, sponsored by the Army JROTC and conducted by College Options Foundation.
The Deming High students competed against nearly 1,600 teams from around the world, and placed second in an online competition.
The team also placed second in its brigade, consisting of teams from New Mexico, Arizona, Arkansas, Texas, Colorado, Oklahoma, Utah and Wyoming within Army JROTC battalions.
Deming Instructor Anthony Ramirez said one of the main goals of the JROTC Academic Bowl is to prepare students for state exit/graduation exams as well as college entrance exams, such as the SAT and ACT.
The event tests knowledge of JROTC curriculum as well as English, math and science.
