(Deming) – Columbus Electric  officials are warning customers
about a phone scam in which a caller tells  customers they are scheduled for disconnect due to lack of payment or that they  are paying too much for their electricity due to problems with the meter and  they are offering energy
assistance by working on their meter to save them  money.

In the case of the  disconnect scam, the caller is asking for payment over the  phone.

In the case of the  meter problem scam, the caller is charging for work to be done immediately  because a crew is in the area.

In both cases, the  scammers are asking for payment over the phone by credit card, debit card or  prepaid gift card.   Columbus Electric  officials stress that these calls are not coming from them. They do not charge for meter repairs and  all payment reminders are handled internally.

If you have any doubts  about a call regarding your Columbus Electric account, call the office directly  at 546-8838 or 1-800-950-2667.
