(Deming) – For the first time in  over 20 years, Deming will have a new police chief.

Michael Carillo  announced Monday that he is resigning effective March 15th to become  the director of the new Grant County Detention Center.

Carillo, who is from  Silver City, said it was a difficult decision but he is excited to return to his  hometown where he still has family.

Carillo said he had  planned to retire this calendar year anyway, and this opportunity was the  challenge he was looking for.

Carillo actually  managed the Grant County jail while he was a two-term Grant County sheriff in  the late 1980s and early 1990s.

He began his career in  law enforcement in 1972 as a deputy with the Grant County Sheriff’s department,  and served for a period as Bayard Police Chief in the early  1980s.

He began his tenure as  Deming Police Chief in November of 1992.  Carillo said he was  proud of his work as Deming Police Chief, and enjoyed putting on the uniform and  reporting to work every
day.

His replacement will be  named by Mayor Andres Silva.
