(Deming) – A Deming man has been  sentenced to 10 years in
prison followed by five years of supervised release for  his methamphetamine trafficking conviction.

35-year-old Derek  Marcus Garcia was arrested in September of 2011 after authorities caught him  with approximately 195 grams of meth.

According to  information from the U.S. Department of Justice, Garcia was stopped by a New  Mexico State Police officer for a traffic violation, and the meth was found in a  bag in his pants after a  Border Patrol narcotics canine alerted officers to its presence.

Garcia, who pleaded  guilty to a charge of possession of methamphetamine with intent to Distribute  last June, was sentenced by a federal judge in Las Cruces  Tuesday.


He has been out of jail but was  given 60 days to surrender
to the U.S. Bureau of Prisons to begin serving his  prison
sentence.
