(Deming) – The local “Shop with a Cop” program raised over
$18,000 this year to help provide Christmas gifts for children in Luna
County.

Organization president Richard Cowles said they were able to provide 350  deserving Deming Public School students with a $35 Kmart gift card, and still  provided 30 families with a $100 food voucher to Peppers Supermarket along with  a Kmart gift card.

The $35 gift card was an increase of $10 from last  year.

Cowles and his committee members thanked Peppers for matching the  contribution for each food voucher, so twice as many families could  benefit.

The annual “Shop with a Cop” shopping day took place December  1st, and the food vouchers were
distributed last  week.  The group also delivered toys to preschool students this  month.

Cowles said the organization receives donations from individuals,  businesses and organizations each year.

“Shop with a Cop” volunteers also held several fundraising events this  year, including a yard sale, trash pickup, bowling tournament, softball  tournament, a 50/50 raffle and an ongoing Valentine’s Day raffle.
