(Deming) – A steer raised by Skylar Miller was selected as the Grand Champion of the Southern New Mexico State Fair in Las Cruces Thursday.

Miller’s steer was chosen as the top animal in the tall class  of the Junior Beef Show before being named Grand Champion overall in the tough  competition.

Miller also raised another steer that placed second in the  medium-tall class at the multi-county fair. Skylar is a senior at Deming High School.

 Other local youth raising steers that placed in the top three of their  respective classes at the Las Cruces fair were Tanner
Caldwell… Dylan Smyer… and  Kylan Swinney. 

And sheep raised by Luna County youth won two classes in the Southern New  Mexico State Fair Junior Market Lamb Show
Thursday.

Keri Hays’ sheep won the medium-light black-face class… and Sealy  Kuenstler’s sheep won the medium-heavy black-face
class.

Other local youth raising sheep that placed in the top three of their  respective classes at the Las Cruces fair were Annie
Kuenstler… Josey Jackson… Riley Patterson… and Shelbie Peterson.

Many of the youth will sell their animals during the Junior Livestock  Sale Friday night at the Las Cruces fair.

By the way, a number of these same local youth will be showing animals  next week at the Southwestern New Mexico State Fair in
Deming.

That fair gets underway Wednesday at the fairgrounds in the Deming  Industrial Park.
