(Deming) – Attendance at the 2012 Southwestern New Mexico State Fair was down Friday due to conflicts with school in session and the homecoming football game, but Saturday’s attendance was strong.
That information was presented among reports at the annual meeting of the Southwestern New Mexico State Fair
Association Thursday night.
Two of the four current board members whose terms were expiring were re-elected to three-year terms. Re-elected were Marty Miller and Susie Swope.
And two more people – Berenda McWright and Cal Wenzel – were elected to three-year terms.
Officers for 2013 are President Sandy Gunter… Vice-President Susie Swope… Secretary Berenda McWright… and Treasurer Genea Caldwell.
And the 2013 fair dates were announced.This year’s fair is set for October 9th-13th, which means it will again follow the Southern New Mexico State Fair, which is set for October 1st-6th.
Caldwell said they’ve already contracted with Bennett Carnival – the same carnival that does the Great American Duck Race each August and was part of the 2012 fair.
(Deming) -- Three local residents and a local organization
were recognized as "Friends of 4-H" during the Luna County 4-H Awards Banquet Monday night.
Appreciation plaques were given to volunteers Jessica Johnson, Paul Offutt and Tim Hartman, and to members of
the Luna County Farm and Livestock Bureau.
All four "Friends of 4-H" were selected by the 4-H members to be honored for their various contributions to area youth and the local 4-H program.
During the awards ceremony, local 4-H members were recognized for their project record books, and the 4-H members who are high school seniors were highlighted in a slide presentation for their years with the program.
Also, 4-H families donated items for a silent auction which raised money for scholarships and other activities.
The incoming Luna County 4-H Council officers were inducted as well. The 2012-2013 President is Brannick Sweetser… Vice-President is Shelbie Peterson… Secretary is Stephanie Swope… Treasurer is Mia Gallosa… Reporter is A.J. Sera… and Song and Recreation Leader is Jason Lewis.
(Deming) – Luna County 4-H and FFA members raised pigs that won several classes in the Southern New Mexico State Fair Junior Market Swine Show in Las Cruces Wednesday.
A pig raised by Zakery Speir won the light-weight Duroc class… a pig raised by Kari Dominguez won the medium-weight Hamp class… and a pig raised by Riley Patterson won the light-medium-weight Cross Class.
Other Luna County youth raising pigs that placed in the top three of their respective classes were: Kincade Jackson… Ronnie Simmons… Brannick Sweetser… Dalton Trantham… and Lynette Von Tress.
Many of the youth will sell their animals during the Junior Livestock Sale Friday night at the Las Cruces fair.
Local Youth Place in SNMSF Goat Show
(Deming) – Luna County 4-H and FFA members raised goats that won several classes in the Southern New Mexico State Fair Junior Market Meat Goat Show in Las Cruces Wednesday.
A goat raised by Presley Jackson won the super-light-weight class… a goat raised by Stephanie Swope won the light-medium-weight class… and a goat raised by Keri Hays won the super-heavy-weight class.
Other Luna County youth raising goats that placed in the top three of their respective classes were: Kincade Jackson… Shelbie Peterson… and Dalton Trantham.

(Deming) – This year’s Luna County 4-H Rodeo Team members have been practicing hard and traveling to rodeos across the state in preparation for next month’s State 4-H Rodeo Finals.
The seven local team members who have qualified for the state finals are, alphabetically, Sophia Magneson, Tee Pickett, Tel Pickett, Taylor Scepka, Megan Simmons, Shandi Treadwell and Starlyn Treadwell.
Although competition across New Mexico is tough, the local youth have become top contenders in their respective events.
Sophia Magneson competes in barrels, poles and goat tying… Tee Pickett competes in breakaway roping, team roping – heading and heeling, and ribbon roping… Tel Pickett competes in tie-down calf roping, team roping – heading and heeling, and ribbon roping… Taylor Scepka competes in barrels and breakaway roping… Megan Simmons competes in breakaway roping, barrels and poles… Shandi Treadwell competes in barrels, flags, poles and goat tying… and Starlyn Treadwell competes in breakaway roping, barrels, poles and goat tying.
The State 4-H Rodeo Finals will be held September 7th-9th at the Southern New Mexico Fairgrounds west of Las Cruces.
