(Deming) – Mimbres Memorial  Hospital and Nursing Home is
going tobacco-free on May 6th, 2013.

That means no tobacco  use of any kind will be permitted inside or outside of the hospital or nursing  home or on any
affiliated property.

And those areas outside  the hospital currently designated for smoking which are used by employees,  patients and visitors will be eliminated as of May  6th.

Hospital officials said  they are committed to the health and safety of their employees and patients, and  believe they have a responsibility to take a leadership role on this major  health
issue.

Establishing all their  properties as tobacco-free, they say, firmly supports that  belief.

Officials said they  wanted to give employees and the public ample notice to adjust to the change,  and are asking for community support as they go tobacco-free on May  6th.

(Deming) – An 11-year-old  California boy died following a one-vehicle rollover accident on the interstate  Saturday night.

The driver of the 2001  Ford Excursion, 49-year-old Rosalio Torres, said a driver cut him off and he  lost control of the vehicle, causing it to go off the roadway and  roll.

There were five people  in the Excursion at the time of the accident. One had to be extracted from the  wreckage using the “jaws of life.” Several were flown by helicopter to El Paso  for treatment of injuries sustained in the rollover.  It was not immediately known whether  those injuries were

(Deming) -- City of Deming police officers are doing their  part to help make this a better Christmas for a couple of kids in  need.

Chief Michael Carillo said his officers pitched in money to buy two
bicycles to be donated to recipients selected from the city’s  "Make a Child Smile" tree.

City staffers annually collect names of children who would  benefit from donated gifts at Christmas time.  Organizers then place a tree in the John  Strand Municipal Building at 309 South Gold with information tags available for  people who would like to donate.

This year 25 children -- ages 2 to 10 -- will benefit from  the gift tree.

Carillo said the officers wanted to go together this year and  buy a bicycle.  Funds came in,
he  said, and they were able to buy two.

Gifts – including the two bicycles – must be returned to city  hall by Monday, December
17th.

(Deming) – The graduation date for the Deming High School  Class of 2013 has been set.

Deming High Principal Janean Garney said the Deming School Board approved  the graduation date of Friday, May 24th, 2013.

Garney said the date, which is nearly a week later than many years, was  selected because of statewide calendar issues.

Years in which July 1st falls on a Sunday shift  the New Mexico Activities Association calendar to a 52-week calendar, not a  53-week calendar as in every other year.July 1st, 2012, was on a Sunday, and that set the NMAA  calendar for 2012-2013.

The difference with the NMAA calendar means statewide activities are  adjusted by six days, and athletic and activity events run one week  later. Garney said seniors will have the week of May 20th off for  their “senior week.”  Mandatory graduation practice will be Friday, May 24th at 9  a.m.
