COLUMBUS, N.M. (AP) — Inspectors working border crossings in southern New Mexico and West Texas have discovered two types of agricultural pests in separate shipments of red peppers from Mexico.
U.S. Customs and Border Protection officials say last week stink bugs were found during an inspection at the Columbus, N.M., port of entry and flea beetles were found by inspectors working in Presidio, Texas.
Agricultural specialists say stink bugs can ruin entire crops and the beetles can damage crops in a number of ways.
Both shipments of red peppers were promptly returned to Mexico.
Customs and Border Protection acting field director David Higgerson says agricultural inspections help safeguard farmers by stopping potentially devastating pests and diseases from spreading to U.S. crops. He noted the significance of the region's chile crop.

Entry forms are available at locations with “Sponsoring Merchant” signs, and organizers say they will not share personal shopping or dining information outside of the contest.
Winners will receive gift certificates from local merchants.

USDA Rural Development State Director Terry Brunner (Deming) – USDA Rural Development State Director Terry Brunner will be in Deming Wednesday for a public outreach meeting.
Brunner said he wants to listen to residents about issues affecting those living in rural New Mexico so Rural Development can be better prepared to support and create sustainable rural communities.
Brunner will be in Deming Wednesday at 8 a.m. at the La Fonda Restaurant, 601 East Pine Street, for an informal meeting dubbed “Give Your Two Cents to Terry.”
He said since becoming state director three years ago, many of the conversations he had began with someone saying, “Let me give you my two cents.”
Brunner said from those conversations he learned about various issues facing rural New Mexico in areas including housing, clean water, job creation and the expansion of broadband and electrical service.
Again, the informal community meeting with USDA Rural Development State Director Terry Brunner will be Wednesday from 8-9 a.m. at the La Fonda Restaurant. Everyone is invited.
