(Deming) – Here’s the area crime report:
Nicholas Margentina, age 33, was arrested on a U.S. Marshall’s warrant… Vernon McGee, age 47, was arrested on an Adult Probation and Parole office warrant for a probation violation… Donald Peedin, age 62, was arrested on an Adult Probation and Parole office warrant for a probation violation… Carlos Veleta, age 61, was arrested on a Magistrate warrant for failure to appear… Alejandro Perez, age 34, was arrested on two Municipal warrants for failure to pay fines… Misty Loreto, age 32, was arrested on a Municipal warrant for failure to pay fines… and Baltazar Barraza, age 24, was cited for shoplifting.
Also… a handgun, two computers, a television and other electronics, clothing and consumables with a combined value of over $8,400 were taken from a residence off Creosote Road Southwest… and a 45-year-old Deming woman reported being the victim of fraud after a company demanded payment of a debt that turned out to be a scam; the woman paid $200 before reporting the incident to the Luna County Sheriff’s Department.
(Deming) – The Luna County Commissioners will meet in special session Monday.
The purpose of the meeting is to go into an executive – orclosed – session to discuss limited personnel matters pertaining to the Luna County volunteer fire departments.
The meeting is set to begin at 8:30 Monday morning in the commission chambers, located on the third floor of the courthouse. The meeting is open to the public.
(Deming) -- A federal indictment has named nine individuals accused of participating in a Deming-based ring that allegedly distributed large amounts of methamphetamine in Deming, Las Cruces and Sunland Park.
Arrested Thursday were 26-year-old Ivan Jesus Majalca, 47-year-old Adam Galindo, and 22-year-old Jose Angel Morales – all of Deming… 36-year-old Ricardo Rodriguez-Magallanes, a Mexican national residing in Deming… 44-year-old Eleazar Olivas-Mendoza, a Mexican national residing in Las Cruces… and 44-year-old Gildardo Majalca-Aguilar, a Mexican national residing in Albuquerque.
Also named in the indictment were 25-year-old Leonard Jesus Rico, who has been in federal custody on charges related to the indictment… and 18-year-old Carolina Gonzales-Hermosilla, a Mexican national who is a legal permanent resident, and 30-year-old Karla Iveth Nunez-Ortega, a Mexican national, both of whom have yet to be arrested and are considered fugitives.
The eight-count indictment announced Thursday is the result of a multi-agency seven-month investigation during which undercover agents infiltrated the ring and negotiated numerous transactions involving large quantities of meth and seized over $235,000 in cash.
Participating agencies included the Drug Enforcement Administration, Homeland Security Investigations, the FBI and the Las Cruces Metro Narcotics Agency.

Bernabe Franco, age 19, was arrested on two counts of battery against a household member and criminal damage to property… Brian Witschen, age 35, was arrested for possession of marijuana, concealing identity and on an Adult Probation and Parole Office warrant for a probation violation… Gregg Foster, age 45, was arrested on a Magistrate warrant for two counts of fraud by the issuance of worthless checks and on a Magistrate warrant for failure to appear… Mary Cheney, age 37, who was already incarcerated at the Luna County Detention Center, was served a Graham County, Arizona, warrant for aggravated DUI… Francisco Garza, age 31, was arrested on a Magistrate warrant for failure to pay fines… Arturo Martinez, age 20, was arrested on a Magistrate warrant for failure to pay fines… and Nitin Jain, age 24, of Littleton, Colorado, was cited for possession of marijuana. Also… jewelry items valued at nearly $500 were taken from a residence off Corte de Consuelo.
(Deming) – Deming High School students and parents are invited to College Connection Night Monday.
The event, sponsored by the New Mexico Educational Assistance Foundation and Gear Up New Mexico, is targeted toward high school seniors needing money for college.
A New Mexico Educational Assistance Foundation representative will provide information about the Free Application for Federal Student Aid – or FAFSA – program, as well as information about scholarships, grants, work-study jobs and loan programs.
Students also will be able to connect with recruiters from several colleges in the area.
College Connection Night will take place Monday, October 22nd, at 6 p.m. in the Deming High School All–Purpose Room.
All interested DHS students and parents are encouraged to attend.

Noel Omar Pinto-Fonseco, age 24, was arrested on four counts of conspiracy to traffic cocaine… and Eddy Amaya, age 21, of Columbus, was arrested on a Columbus Municipal warrant for failure to appear.
In juvenile news… the District Attorney’s office filed a petition on a 16-year-old girl for possession of alcohol by a minor… and a 16-year-old boy was cited for trespassing at Deming High School. In other news… a television, car stereo, computer, amplifier, cell phone and credit card with a combined value of over $1,000 were taken from a residence off South Silver; over $300 worth of unauthorized charges have been made on the credit card… a window valued at over $1,000 was broken on a residence off South Bryant Street… a 67-year-old Deming woman reported fraud after unauthorized transactions for a trac phone appeared on her bank card statement… and over $200 worth of diesel fuel was taken from a semi-truck parked at a local motel.
(Deming) -- In recognition of Pro Bono Week, the Luna County District Court will host a Pro Bono Legal Clinic on Monday, October 22nd, from 10 a.m.-12:00 p.m. at the Luna County District Court, 855 South Platinum.
Some local attorneys have agreed to donate their time and expertise to offer legal advice of a general nature to the public.
Anyone with a legal question can sign up at the courthouse security desk Monday morning for a free 15-minute private session with an attorney.
The consultations will be on a first-come, first-served basis.

(Deming) – The Deming School Board will meet in regular session Thursday.
Included on the agenda is approval of the Deming Intermediate School handbook for this school year.
Also, Superintendent Harvielee Moore and her staff will report on a U.S. Teaching Ambassador Fellowship Program and a review of instructional audits.
The meeting is set to begin at 5 p.m. in the board room of the Emmett Shockley Administration Building, 400 Cody Road.The meeting is open to the public.
A closed session to discuss limited personnel, pending or threatened litigation and the former Columbus School building and other properties will precede the open meeting at 4 p.m.
