NMSU officials say president on "annual leave"

LAS CRUCES, N.M. (AP) — After a week of questions, New Mexico State University employees have now been told that university President Barbara Couture is taking voluntary annual leave.

Couture's unexpected absence and the silence it has brought from the Board of Regents has stoked speculation on the Las Cruces campus and criticism about an apparent lack of transparency.

Board members have told the Las Cruces Sun-News that they will discuss Couture at a public meeting on Monday.

Employees received an email from NMSU Vice President Ben Woods on Thursday saying Couture initiated the leave. That came after three days of evasive answers to inquiries about the nature of her absence. The email said it was sent to counter incorrect reports that she was been placed on leave.

Holloman AFB to lose 250 jobs when F-22 leaves

ALBUQUERQUE, N.M. (AP) — An estimated 250 jobs will be lost at Holloman Air Force Base next year when the base loses its F-22 Raptor fighters.  The detachment of the 44th Fighter Group and its fleet of F-22s is moving to  Tyndall Air Force Base. Col. Scott Crogg says the detachment is an Air Force Reserve unit that will support a new F-22 combat squadron standing up at Tyndall in spring 2013.

The Albuquerque Journal reports that Holloman has been a
schoolhouse for F-22 pilots since mid-2008. The Air Force announced the base outside Alamogordo would lose its F-22s in a consolidation effort after a 2009 decision to stop buying the costly planes in favor of the new F-35 fighter.

(Deming) – Charges have been dismissed against a former Luna  County warden accused of approving inmate furloughs without judicial  authorization.

Sixth Judicial District Court Judge Daniel Viramontes Thursday granted a  motion to dismiss all 14 misdemeanor charges filed in January on former warden  John Krehbiel.

Viramontes ruled that the furloughs in question were granted as part of  the county’s Recidivism Reduction Program – a program already in place before  Krehbiel was hired as warden.

Inmates were sentenced to the program by judges, and furloughs were  earned through good behavior and compliance with provisions such as attending  substance abuse prevention and anger management classes.

Viramontes found that the furloughs were not a violation of the state  statute governing release of prisoners, since the  furloughs technically extended  the boundaries of the jail and were not a release from  custody.

All 14 of the inmates in the questioned furlough cases returned to the  jail upon completion of their furloughs.

The 25-count motion for dismissal was filed in May, and heard by  Viramontes in August.

(Deming) -- Local law enforcement and other service providers   are participating Saturday in a nationwide Drug Enforcement Administration  initiative to get outdated prescription drugs out of homes.

Officials say unused prescription drugs often become part of  the illegal substance abuse problem in a community.

Many residents are concerned about the best way to dispose of  unused and outdated prescription drugs. Since  most abused prescription drugs  come from family and friends, people are urged to dispose of their unwanted  medications before they unwittingly become a drug provider.

The location for this Saturday's DEA "take back" initiative  will be inside Wal-Mart near the check-out stands, and drop-off boxes will be  set up from 10 a.m. to 2 p.m.

Residents are asked to drop off their unused, unwanted and  expired prescription drugs -- no questions asked. They are asking you to place any liquid  medications in a sealed container, and not to bring needles or  syringes.

Again, the drop-off boxes will be set up inside Wal-Mart near  the check-out stands this Saturday from 10 to 2.  The service is free and anonymous -- no  questions asked.

(Deming) – Deming business owners are being warned to watch  for counterfeit $100 bills being circulated in the area.

Deming Police Chief Michael Carillo said three counterfeits were  discovered by businesses Wednesday.  Four businesses reported receiving the bills the day  before.

Carillo cautioned that these bills may pass a normal  counterfeit-verification pen swipe because they are actual $5 bills being  chemically washed and then reprinted with the $100 bill image.

They are detectable as counterfeits, however, because of the lower  quality ink and the watermark.

Detective Clint Hogan said the $5 bill watermark is evident on the fake  $100s, so people need to hold the bills up to a light and look for the large  number 5 in the watermark and the strip that indicates the bill’s true  denomination.

Hogan asked that anyone receiving a fake bill retain it and call the  Deming Police Department instead of returning it to the  customer.

Carillo said they have two suspects – an Anglo male and a Hispanic male – and information on suspect vehicles.  The investigation is continuing.
