(Deming) – Deming High School officials are looking to return to a seven-period day with year-round classes.

Superintendent Harvielee Moore said the issue will be discussed at a special school board meeting Thursday afternoon.

Moore said the high school leadership team, led by Principal Janean Garney, has been studying the pros and cons of a seven-period day with a year-round schedule as part of their continuous improvement plan.

Moore said they have been analyzing ways to improve teaching and learning opportunities and to continue to support improvement in student achievement, including test scores.

Currently, Deming High students have only four classes each semester, and their schedule changes completely in January so they have a different set of four classes for the second semester each year.

Moore added that high school officials have visited another district that successfully transitioned from a four/four model to a seven-period block.

Garney and her staff will present their information to the board members and administration at Thursday’s meeting, set to begin at 1:15 p.m. in the board room of the Emmett Shockley Administration Building, 400 Cody Road.  The meeting is open to the public, but no action will be taken.

Moore said a survey will be sent to parents soliciting input before it is decided whether to change the schedule structure.

Also on the agenda for Thursday’s special meeting is the district’s Facilities Master Plan.
