(Deming) – Here’s the area crime report:
Michael Serverino, age 60, was arrested for possession of a controlled substance with intent to distribute and conspiracy. Jaime Perez, age 32, of Silver City, was arrested for being a felon in possession of a firearm.
Joshua Gonzales, age 20, was arrested on a District Court warrant for a probation violation… and Jimmy Mathis, age 31, was arrested on a Municipal warrant for failure to pay fines.
Also… a 2003 ATV valued at $7,000 was taken from a business off Highway 418 Southwest.
(Deming) – The Marshall Memorial Library Speakers Series will feature the story of a woman thought to be New Mexico’s first serial killer.
Storyteller Patricia Kiddney of El Paso will bring to life the true story of Bronco Sue, a woman who lived in New Mexico in the 1800s and was accused of murdering her husbands when she tired of them or when someone better came along.
Her trial in Hillsboro reportedly drew national attention and was covered by the New York Times.She was represented by attorney Albert Fountain for the murder in Socorro of her next-to-last husband, and was acquitted of the charge.
Kiddney has been active in the El Paso Historical Society since 1992, and grew up on ranches in historic areas of the lower Rio Grande valley and West Texas.
Her storytelling began with “The Walk Through History” based on famous people buried in Concordia Cemetery, and over the years she has developed approximately 20 characters based on famous and infamous women of the west.
Her portrayal of Bronco Sue will be presented this Saturday, February 2nd, from 10 a.m.-noon at 119 East Pine Street.The presentation is open to the public.
 50-year-old Thomas Lehnerd (Deming) – A Luna County resident is facing 170 counts related to alleged child sex abuse offenses in Pennsylvania.
50-year-old Thomas Lehnerd was arrested by the Luna County Sheriff’s Office on a Butler, Pennsylvania, warrant containing an extensive list of charges, including a combined 126 counts of aggravated indecent assault with a child and deviate sexual intercourse with a child.
Sheriff’s Investigator David Holguin said the charges involve three female family members, with the crimes beginning when the children were toddlers and continuing for years.
Some of the crimes date back to nearly 20 years ago, and the victims are all now adults.
Lehnerd moved here with his wife three years ago after visiting an aunt who lives in Luna County.
He was arrested at his Marana Road Southeast home Tuesday after local authorities were notified by Pennsylvania authorities that he may be living here.
Holguin said there was no reason to believe Lehnerd committed any crimes in Luna County.

Misty Acosta, age 41, was charged with embezzlement… Estrella Granado, age 35, of Silver City, was arrested for possession of drug paraphernalia and on an Adult Probation and Parole Office warrant for a probation violation… Grisel Flores, age 29, of Silver City, was arrested on two Grant County warrants, a Luna County warrant and a Deming Municipal warrant… and Ana Rivera, age 55, was arrested on a Dona Ana County warrant for failure to pay fines.
Also… an ATV, a generator and a utility trailer with a combined value of $2,700 were taken from a residence off the Columbus Highway… a truck battery valued at $150 was taken from off East Fourth Street… a bicycle valued at $150 was taken from outside the Columbus library… and a residence off South Nickel was broken into.
(Deming) – The Deming School Board will meet in special session Thursday.
According to the legal notice, the purpose of the meeting is to hold a work session to discuss a proposal from the city of Deming regarding an industrial revenue bond.
No official action will be taken.
The special session is scheduled to begin at 3:30 p.m. Thursday in the board room of the Emmett Shockley Administration Building, 400 Cody Road.
The meeting is open to the public.
(Deming) -- The Wildcats were on the road to El Paso tonight (Tuesday) to take on El Paso Cathedral Fighting Irish. It was a rough night for the Cats.
Freshman: Cathedral 48 – Deming 36 Junior Varsity: Cathedral 54 – Deming 40 Varsity: Cathedral 47 – Deming 37
Top scoring for the Cats in varsity action: Dominic Saenz - 9 Phillip Longoria - 8 Eric Saenz - 7 Ernesto Saucedo - 5 For the night… the Cats were zero for nine in free throws… and scored only 2 three pointers.
Cats had 13 turnovers but lead in rebounds 24 to 21.
Cats now go 15 and 5 overall and will open up District action in Deming against the Chapparal Lobos Tuesday February 5th.
The Deming Ladycats play Saturday in Deming against the Hot Springs Lady Tigers at 6:30pm. The Ladycats also open District Feb 5thon the Road to Chapparal.

Hilario Baeza, age 52, was arrested for battery against a household member… Jeff Rivers, age 29, of Rodeo, was arrested for robbery… Roberto Vasquez, age 31, was arrested for interference with officers.
Nancy Hand, age 50, was arrested on a Municipal warrant for failure to pay fines… and Roberto Rodriguez, age 67, was arrested on a Municipal warrant for failure to appear.
Also… a 6x12 cargo trailer with furniture and miscellaneous items was taken from a location off East Emerson Drive; the trailer was valued at $4,500 and the contents at $1,000… a laptop, CD player, speakers and amplifier with a combined value of over $1,000 were taken from a business off West Spruce… a 50-year-old woman reported being the victim of identity theft… and a barbed-wire fence was cut off Peru Mill Road.
Rick Reese | Terri Reese | Ryin Reese | LAS CRUCES, N.M. (AP) — A federal judge is considering whether to grant a new trial to a Deming couple and their son who were convicted of making false statements during a 2011 firearms sting at their Luna County gun store.
A jury convicted Rick and Terri Reese and their son, Ryin, in August of making false statements on investigation forms. They were acquitted of most of the charges stemming from an investigation in which undercover agents posed as straw buyers of guns in 2011.
According to the Las Cruces Sun-News, a defense motion says prosecutors violated the defendants' due process rights by failing to turn over evidence that could challenge the credibility of a prosecution witness.
Judge Robert C. Brack held a hearing Monday in Las Cruces.

Michael Chavez, age 32, was arrested on two counts of battery… Raymond Casillas, age 37, was arrested for assault… Gabriel Porras, age 21, was arrested for reckless driving, interference with hospital staff, no driver’s license and on a failure-to-stop driving violation… Gabriel Montano, age 37, was arrested for possession of less than an ounce of marijuana and resisting or evading officers… Richard Chandler, age 21, was arrested for shoplifting at Wal-Mart and possession of drug paraphernalia.
Michael Estrada, age 41, was arrested on an Adult Probation and Parole Office warrant for a probation violation and for possession of drug paraphernalia… Conrad Villegas, age 28, was arrested on an Adult Probation and Parole Office warrant for a probation violation… Anna Davis, age 27, of Silver City, was arrested on a Grant County warrant for failure to appear… Victoria Martinez, age 23, was arrested on a Lincoln County warrant for driving while license was suspended or revoked and no insurance.
Kristina Garay, age 34, was arrested on a Municipal warrant for failure to appear… Paul Mirabal, age 44, of Mesilla Park, was arrested on a Municipal warrant for failure to pay fines… Loren Irvin, age 49, was cited for shoplifting at Wal-Mart… and Paula Irvin, age 43, was cited for shoplifting at Wal-Mart.
Also… the District Attorney’s office filed a petition on a 16-year-old boy for a probation violation… a 16-year-old girl was picked up on a probation violation… and a 15-year-old boy was charged with shoplifting at Wal-Mart.
And in other news… a couch set and a television were taken from a residence off La Paz Road Southwest… and a window valued at $100 was broken on a residence off West Orange.
 Glory Johnson, Joanne Hethcox, Grisel Melendez (Deming) – The Luna County manager was recently elected to a state board and three county staffers have become certified.
County Manager Kelly Kuenstler was elected to the New Mexico Association of Counties’ Multi-Line Self Insurance Pool board of directors.
Kuenstler will represent the southwest geographic district of Luna, Catron, Grant, Hidalgo, Sierra and Socorro counties.
She replaces Grant County Manager Jon Saari, who served on the board for six years.
And three Luna County staff members have graduated from the New Mexico EDGE County College.
The New Mexico EDGE – or Education Designed to Generate Excellence in the Public Sector – is an umbrella organization operated through the New Mexico Cooperative Extension Service under which the County College, founded with NM Association of Counties, the NM Certified Public Manager Program, and other continuing education certification programs are administered.
Joanne Hethcox, Glory Johnson and Grisel Melendez completed 54 hours of education and submitted an essay on government service to receive their certificates.
Hethcox, the county’s budget and procurement director, has worked for Luna County for 11 years. Johnson, whose titles include assistant to the county manager and special projects supervisor, has worked for Luna County for 10 years.
And Melendez, an accounts payable specialist and health care coordinator, has worked for Luna County for two years.
The three plan to continue their education through the state EDGE College in an effort to earn recognition as Certified Public Managers in the next year.
